Chapter Nineteen

Marissa sank into the seat beside Arturo and fastened her seatbelt. Teo nodded to them and took his seat four rows up at the front of the plane. The flight was almost fully booked, and the last-minute decision meant they were unable to be seated as a trio. Marissa insisted on Arturo sitting beside her, not just because she was far more comfortable in his company but also because she wanted to discuss the changing Luca situation with him.

They made small talk while the few remaining passengers boarded. Marissa wanted the engine noise to overpower the potential for their conversation to be heard by Teo.

When they were in the air, Arturo turned in his seat. “What’s happening with Luca Romero, Marissa?” he said, his voice just above a whisper.

“What do you mean?” She knew exactly what he meant, but her instinctive tendency toward secrecy kicked in—as did her irritation that he knew her too well—and she answered on autopilot. “We’re going to help Soto secure the best deal possible so Father makes more money.” She didn’t temper her distaste, and she didn’t have to.

“That’s not what I’m talking about, and you know it isn’t. You’re spending a lot of time with her.”

“If you’re talking about this morning, I had to get her set up in the villa before we left. It’s best for us if we get ahead of whatever schedule Soto might already have agreed to on the delivery for the scripts and edits.”

He pressed his lips together and shook his head slowly. “I’m talking about fresh-cut flowers, Egyptian cotton sheets, and engraved MacBooks worth sixty-thousand pesos.”

Marissa held his gaze. “She needed to be comfortable and feel well looked after if we want her to do this for Father. Her only incentive to earn money for the woman who stole her life is to stay alive.” She flicked her hand. “And the Mac wasn’t that expensive. Pedro has a stock of them and gave me a favorable deal.”

“What about the evening visit to share dinner with her?”

“You were there. It wasn’t exactly intimate with fifty other women present, Arturo. What are you worried about?”

He tilted his head and looked at her, his expression incredulous. “You know what I’m worried about, Marissa. You’ve never looked at anyone the way you look at her.”

She had no answer to that clichéd declaration. Now that she was finally getting to spend some time with Luca, even in unfavorable circumstances, their connection was as undeniable as she’d thought it would be. Though it seemed impossible after one conversation, Marissa had known she was attracted to Luca, and talking with her more had simply reinforced her belief. Her mamita had always taught her to trust her instincts, and she had no intention of ignoring that advice now. Surrounded by the threat of violence, and with Luca held there against her will all of that seemed to fade into the background when they were together. “What about the way I look at her?” Could Arturo
